Snapchat Update Falls Flat |

Snapchat recently rolled out an update that includes a redesigned interface. The new layout has caused confusion among users, as many argue that it makes it difficult to view both one’s own Story and the Stories of their friends. Additionally the updated Discover page shows paid advertisements and the Stories of public figures — such as the Kardashians — that are not necessarily subscribed to. Snapchat removed both the dedicated Stories page and the Inbox, instead adding features of both pages to the Friends page. As a result, it is now easy to watch the Stories of the people you recently Snapped and difficult to find anyone else’s. What can be assumed to be a streamlining and simplifying update actually backfired on Snapchat.

Unfortunately for Snap, this was not well received and the apps new look left many users feeling alienated to the point of creating a petition. In less than a week, the petition “Remove the new Snapchat Update” on Change.org cites “general annoyance” among other things as the reason for requesting the removal of the update. It has more than 1,000,000 signatures.

Users have also taken to Twitter to voice their reactions to the new Snapchat. LikeFolio has traced the spike of Snapchat’s unfavorable mentions to the day that the new update was rolled out, calling the response “worse than the reaction to Chipotle’s E.coli outbreak.” Many tweets voiced using Instagram Stories instead. Consequently, LikeFolio examined an increase in Instagram Story usage following Snapchat’s update.

A Snapchat spokesperson acknowledged that it could take some time for users to get used to the apps changes, but they are hoping people will eventually come to appreciate it. It is unlikely, despite user dissatisfaction, that Snapchat will revert back to the previous design.
