New Restrictions on Teens' Instagram Accounts
Teen Mode: Activated
September 23, 2024
In response to growing concerns about teen safety on social media, Instagram has introduced a new set of default protections aimed at minimising harmful exposure for younger users. These changes come amid increasing discussions about potential age limits for social media access in various countries, with platforms like Instagram facing scrutiny over their impact on younger audiences.
Instagram’s new teen protection mode includes a variety of safety features designed to limit who can contact teens, what they can see, and how much time they spend on the app. The goal is to create a safer environment for teens while providing peace of mind for parents.
Here are the key components of the update:
- Private Accounts: All teens will automatically have private accounts, restricting who can see their content and connect with them. Those under 16 will need parental consent to opt out of this mode.
- Messaging Restrictions: Teen users will only be able to receive messages from people they follow or are already connected with, providing more control over their interactions.
- Sensitive Content Controls: Teens will be placed in the most restrictive setting for sensitive content, limiting exposure to potentially harmful material.
- Limited Interactions: Teen accounts will only allow tagging or mentions by users they follow. Instagram’s Hidden Words feature, which filters out offensive language, will also be enabled by default.
- Time Limits: Instagram will remind teen users to log off after 60 minutes of daily use, encouraging more mindful social media consumption.
- Sleep Mode: Notifications will be muted automatically between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and DMs will receive automatic replies during that time.
Additionally, teens will have more control over the content they see on Instagram’s Explore page, allowing them to choose specific topics of interest instead of relying solely on algorithm-driven recommendations. This feature gives younger users a more curated experience based on their preferences.
The impact of these updates could be significant, especially as Instagram remains a central part of many teens’ online lives. However, there is also the possibility that these restrictions could push teens to spend more time on other apps like Snapchat and TikTok, which are already popular alternatives for messaging and entertainment.
Meta (Instagram’s parent company) hopes that these changes will address concerns from parents and regulators alike. Various governments, including those in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and Denmark, are considering new regulations around age limits and safety on social media platforms. With Instagram frequently in the spotlight for its potential negative effects on young users, Meta’s latest move could be an attempt to preemptively address some of these concerns.
Interestingly, these updates are being rolled out automatically, making them more than just a public relations exercise. In the past, while Meta introduced numerous safety features, many parents did not actively implement them. By making these restrictions the default for all teen users, Instagram is taking a more proactive approach to online safety.
Though teens may still find ways to work around these protections, Instagram has announced plans to introduce age verification technology to catch users who falsely list their age as adults. This technology, expected to roll out in the U.S. next year, will further bolster efforts to protect younger users.
While it remains to be seen how teen users will adapt to these new restrictions, this is one of Instagram’s most comprehensive efforts yet to ensure safer online experiences for teens. Whether it will be enough to stem broader regulatory pressure is uncertain, but it’s a step toward addressing the growing concerns surrounding social media and teen well-being.
